It all started over the world’s best coconut cake at King’s Hawaiian Restaurant in Torrance, California. The past year had been the roughest anyone around the table had ever been through. Lives were being dismantled – not from sickness or divorce, but from the euphemistically called Great Recession. It has been one year since the collapse of the global financial systems, national unemployment in the United States tips close to 10 percent, while certain areas of the country unemployment tops 10 percent and higher scraping close to the Great Depression era. We found ourselves talking about 401K and college funds that had disappeared and, for some, jobs that had disappeared. Instead of wallowing in our own stories and additional rounds of cake, we decided to collect the stories – giving voice to those living in this time, giving voice to those managing the changes and giving voice to the new way of life we were seeing. We will be adding stories as often as possible, at least weekly. If you’d like to share your story, email it to wakingfrdream@gmail.com
